Practical Introduction to Statistics

The online-seminar is divided into 4 parts:

Day 1 – Introduction
• Trainer introduction
• Introduction of the participants and their research fields (max. 1 slide)
• The fundamentals of all statistics: data and the formulation of questions
• What is statistics?
• Basic concepts of statistics

Aim: Participants will understand the basic features of statistics, will be able to develop simple quantitative surveys and classify basic statistical concepts within their general context.

Day 1 – Fundamentals of statistics
• Measurements of central tendency, measurements of dispersion, distribution
• Multivariate observation
• Measurements of relationship
• Correlation and causality
• Linear regression
• … and their practical calculation using Excel

Aim: Participants will be able to answer simple statistical questions graphically and numerically using univariate and multivariate methods.

Day 2 – Hypothesis tests
• Fundamentals of a hypothesis test
• Significance
• Comparison with a target
• Comparison of two populations
• Test in a normal distribution
• Conduct tests with R-Shiny-browser-Apps

Aim: Participants will understand the most important statistical tests, the principles of statistical testing and will be able to apply them to their research questions with the appropriate software

Day 2 - Application of concepts
• Practical implementation in groups
• Every group can choose a data set and answer one or more statistical questions about it
• Presentation of results
• Conclusion of the workshop

Aim: Participants will be able to apply the skills they have learned to answering statistical questions and will present their results.
